Her name was Aurora and she was bright like the Aurora Borealis. My grandmother loved painting her nails in bright pink with floral designs. The week after she passed away, I worked intuitively, forming sheets of paper while listening to boleros (a genre of slow-tempo Latin music). Remembering the way she danced with my grandfather, sang to her parakeet, cared for her orchids, and cooked the most delicious picadillos, I pulp painted my way through memories of Tita Aurora. When all I had left of her was intangible, the transformative act of papermaking started a healing process through an art experience that was tactile and physical.
