design challenge 4

nature inspired postcards

Gathering inspiration is part of the design process and it comes in all shapes and sizes. Inspiration helps us get fresh ideas. Nature inspired art and design is everywhere! It is always refreshing to take a walk outside, and like a sponge, absorb all of the natural beauty. Spring is a wonderful season to watch nature as it comes alive through color and texture.

Challenge:

Flowers are often used as symbols of gratitude, love, hope, joy and peace. As we continue to fight COVID-19, it is important to let essential workers know how grateful we are for their service. Let’s care for them by sending them a nature-inspired postcard!

Instructions:

  1. Gather inspiration outside by going on a walk and spending some time with nature.

  2. Take pictures of anything in nature that creates an emotional connection with you.

  3. Draw sketches inspired by your photos. You can watch the video on how to draw flowers.

  4. On your sketchbook draw four 5x7 inch rectangles using a ruler. Each rectangle should be in a clean page.

  5. Draw ONE of the sketches in the rectangle and outline it with a thin black marker.

  6. Below the drawing, write Thank You! Practice hand lettering by watching the video on Hand Lettering. There are more on youtube that you can watch!

  7. Leave your rough designs in black and white. We will discuss them next Tuesday during our zoom meeting. Please take a picture of your 4 sketches and text them to me by this coming Friday, May 8.
