The weather is unpredictable and uncontrollable. When my 3 year old asks why it rains, I always say, “because the plants are thirsty and they need water”. He is not old enough to understand a scientific explanation, but I wish I had one for the rainy seasons in my life.

One day, after driving through the countryside on a gloomy afternoon, I suddenly saw a ray of sunshine piercing through the clouds. As my journey continued, the clouds began clearing up and the sky went from a soft grey to a cool blue. The light was warmer and layers of cotton white clouds slowly dispersed across the sky. Taking a deep breath, I became present in the moment and stilled my thoughts.

When I mix my pigments, I usually have a preconceived idea of the colors that I want. When I made this body of work, I decided to go with my instinct - whatever felt right at the moment. The resulting color palette reminded me of those times I’ve witnessed a warm golden sunset or a clear sky after pouring rain. I thought about journeys, passage of time, transitions and transformation.
